We are all aware of the significance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle through regular exercise and remaining active.  The same holds true for your pupils.  Similar to the rest of our body, our eyes require regular exercise.

We live in an age where gazing at text and images on computer screens, televisions, and mobile devices can cause eye strain and age-related eye disorders.

Here are 7 Eye Exercises to Reduce Eye Strain and Strengthen Eye Muscles that you can do at home on a daily basis:

1.  Flexing

Flexing is an eye exercise that extends and strengthens the eye's occular muscles.

How to perform the flexing exercise:

  • Face the front and gaze directly forwards.
  • Without moving your head, gaze up and then peer down.  Repeat ten times.
  • Next, without moving your head, gaze to the right, and then, without moving your head, look to the left.  Repeat ten times.

2.  Blinking

Blinking is an excellent eye exercise for VDU users in order to reduce eye strain.  While gazing at computer screens, we frequently neglect to blink.  The ability to blink allows us to keep our eyes rejuvenated and maintain concentration for longer.  Simply blink every five seconds for the next two minutes while facing forward.

3.  Focusing Near and Far

Focusing is another great exercise for the eye muscles.

How to perform focusing:

  • This exercise can be performed either upright or seated.
  • Put your thumb approximately 10 inches in front of your face and concentrate on it.
  • Now, concentrate on something else that is 10 to 20 feet distant from you.
  • Alternate between near and far focus several times over the course of two to three minutes.

4.  Palming

Palming is an effective yoga technique for calming the pupils.  Again, this is an excellent eye exercise for frequent computer users. This is a relaxation exercise for the ocular area.

How to perform palming:

  • Close your eyes as you take a seat and close your eyes.
  • Place both palms over each eye.  The palm of the hand should cover the eyes, the fingertips should rest on the forehead, and the palm's base should rest on the cheekbone.
  • Do not apply excessive force to the eyes; ensure that they can breathe readily.
  • Perform this exercise for two minutes.

5.  Zooming

Zooming is an excellent eye exercise for improving concentration and fortifying eye muscles.

How to perform zooming:

  • While seated in a comfortable position, extend your arm and raise your hand in the hitchhiker's position.
  • Concentrate on the forefinger and then retract it until it is three inches from the face.  Concentrate on the forefinger.
  • Then, gradually return the forefinger and forearm to their original positions.
  • Perform this exercise multiple times over the course of 2 minutes.

6.  Figure of Eight

This is an excellent exercise for eye muscle flexibility.  It is easy to execute.  Imagine a large figure 8 lying on its side 10 feet distant, 10 feet from a plain wall.  Trace this path of the figure 8 with your gaze while maintaining head position.  Perform the action one way for one minute and then the opposite way for one minute.
